Our Guided Alta Via 2 through the Dolomites (AV2) crosses the Italian Dolomites via this classic route for it’s northern half. Beginning in Brixen (Bressanone) and heading south over breathtaking high mountain passes all the way to Passo Rolle. many It challenges hikers with long days and steep ascents, yet avoids the via ferratas—so no need for harness or helmet. Along the way you will also have the chance to tag some extra summits such as the Piz de Puez, a real adventure!
AV2 passes through Puez-Odle and Sella groups, then it goes around Marmolada into the Ombretta valley where jagged limestone walls tower above the wild valley and its alpine meadows. Finally after some challenging high mountain passes, the trek heads south for amazing mountain views, dominated by Pala di San Martino.
We tailor made this Alta Via 2 for our hiking clients, selecting the most stunning mountain rifugios high in the Dolomites. You’ll be guided by an experienced trekking leader, but you’ll still need solid experience with steep, multi-day mountain treks. If you’ve already hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc and the Alta Via 1, you’ll be well prepared for this adventure. There’s no luggage transfer available, so you’ll need to carry your pack for the full duration of the trek, and since we cross from one mountain range to the next, there are no bus connections to skip hiking days. Guided Alta Via 2 Dolomites trek with usOf course, no trek in Italy would be complete without the food! While Italian cuisine is famous worldwide, the mountain dishes of the Dolomites are a delicious hidden gem. Why we offer the northern half of the Alta Via 2 in the Dolomites
The Dolomites are steep, wild, and rugged mountains—many of their trails include technical sections with ladders, cables, and bridges across deep gullies and exposed slopes. This is true for much of the original, full-length Alta Via 2. We offer the northern half of the route because we’ve carefully designed an itinerary that captures the beauty and challenge of the AV2 while avoiding its most technical, via ferrata sections.
We don’t continue into the southern half of the Alta Via 2, as that part is suitable only for hikers with previous via ferrata experience and requires carrying a helmet, harness, and via ferrata kit. If you’re interested in exploring those routes, we recommend hiring a certified local mountain guide to safely learn the techniques of via ferrata climbing.
