Guided Haute Route : The Highlights
Ranked as one of the world’s best treks, the Haute Route is a must for any serious hiker. The route stays high in the mountains, and because of this the trails are quiet and unspoilt. Most days are physically demanding, with big climbs up to windy passes.
You’ll travel through a variety of landscapes; from shady forests and fragrant meadows, to wild, barren boulder fields where only the most specialised plants survive. Carved out and surrounded by hanging glaciers, the scenery is at once beautiful and other-worldly. With the help of your guide, look for rare flowers such as the Martagon Lily and the Black Vanilla Orchid (which really do smell like vanilla!), and spot unique alpine wildlife, such as ibex and chamois.
Along the way, you’ll pass sleepy, pastoral villages which seem untouched by time. Treat yourself to a snack or two from a mountain refuge, and dig into a hearty plate of food at the end of your day. We love to snack on myrtille tarts, which use fresh, hand-picked blueberries.
Completing the Haute Route is a difficult, once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Because of this, an unbeatable sense of camaraderie develops over the course of the trip. By joining a guided Haute Route group, you’ll be motivated when things get tough, and you’ll meet other like-minded hikers. Furthermore, by booking a qualified guide, not only will you complete this classic challenge safely, but you’ll benefit from a wealth of local, expert knowledge.
