Welcome to the Aiguilles Rouges (“Red Needles”), a mountain range located right in front of Mont Blanc. The colour of the iron-rich gneiss mountains gives the range its name.
This mountain range has it all : stunning lakes, sharp peaks, technical trails and unforgettable views. This loop is aimed for experienced hikers who want to challenge themselves in a mountain paradise. Some days will be long and intense, but truly rewarding.
We’ve crafted this five-day trek to show you the beauty of this corner of the Alps — a route stitched together from paths we know and love. Thomas (your guide, and proud local from Passy) has spent the past ten years exploring every nook of the Aiguilles Rouges range — running, skiing, wandering, pausing. This route is his personal creation: a custom signed adventure that leads you over calm mountain lakes, through wide open silence, along little-known trails, and to cosy, off-grid mountain huts where the fondue is hot, the stars are sharp, and the card games never end on time.

| Description | |
| Day 1 | From the cute village of Servoz, our tour begins with a long uphill to the “mountain of Pormenaz”. This is already a highlight of our hike with stunning landscape and the view of Mont Blanc. After a well deserved lunch break above the tree line, we will continue toward the lake of Pormenaz, and then our hut for the night: the refuge de Moëde Anterne. |
| Day 2 | Day two will be epic and challenging: the day we (might) climb Mont Buet! 3096m high, the highest point of the tour des Aiguilles Rouges. Amazing views will reward an intense effort to make it to the top. Before that, we will hike from the refuge we slept at to the Col de Salenton : the trail will be wild and remote. Once there, depending on the weather and the group fitness, we will decide if we go to the summit or not. If we do so, we still have 600m to climb: tough but worth it! If we make it to the summit, we’ll hope for good weather to have lunch at the summit. From there it’s not over! We will have a very long downhill of 9km to make it to the accommodation for tonight in Le Buet |
| Day 3 | After 2 days on the west side of the Aiguilles Rouges, today we will go around it from the North and arrive on the east side. It means that we will arrive in the Chamonix valley, with the highest peaks of the Mont Blanc range in front of us. Our goal of the day is the famous Lac Blanc, and that’s where we will spend the night! the effort today will be much easier in terms of distance, elevation gain and altitude. Not a rest day either, but we might have a slower pace. Once at the Lac Blanc, we will enjoy some time around the hut, maybe an extra hike for the most motivated ones. |
| Day 4 | This stage is really about being in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges range. We’ll stay high in altitude (never under 2000m), on mostly rocky terrain with rather small ups and downs. The views will be amazing, both close to the Aiguilles Rouge, their stunning colors, the lakes, and on the other side : the Mont Blanc! At this time of the year and during the week, we might see more wildlife than other hikers which makes it even more special when you know that during the high season this is a very crowded place. |
| Day 5 | It’s already the last day! The time to go back down to Servoz where we started. But before that, we will summit the Aiguillette des Houches: one of the prettiest views we can get on Mont Blanc as we will truly be facing it from close. After that, it’s really time to go down, and it’s going to be quite long: 1500m down! The beginning of the downhill is stunning though as it will be on a ridge. Then we enter the forest and after maybe 1 and half hour more we will be there, at the train station of Servoz. |
This itinerary can be adapted according to weather or mountain conditions, as well as hikers fitness. Thomas remains the only one to make decisions about the program which he can modify for safety reasons.
