Tour du Mont Blanc July – 2025 TMb conditions

Welcome to our Tour du Mont Blanc July 2025 conditions report. In this post we’ll share information about Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) conditions, weather and cultural events. The information comes from our team of local guides, who are currently on the trail. We’ll keep updating this post throughout the month.

By writing this post, we hope to help Tour du Mont Blanc July hikers stay safe and prepare for their upcoming tour! As well as helping this year’s hikers, we hope to also reach future hikers looking for tips. So, if you’re planning a TMB in July 2026, or another year in the future, we will try to make this relevant by describing what to expect from a typical July Tour du Mont Blanc. To learn more about early TMB conditions, read our posts from May and June.

Disclaimer : Below we describe observations from our Tour du Mont Blanc July trips. However, as any experienced hiker knows, conditions change quickly in the mountains! If you’re hiking without a guide, you are responsible for your our decisions! If you have questions, feel free to drop a comment below.

Tour du Mont Blanc July : general conditions

Because we started the summer season with less snow on the ground than previous years, the snow has melted quickly from the high passes. June 2025 was hot, with temperatures reaching 30°c in the valleys. At the time of writing (early July), there are only a few patches of snow remaining. In general, this means the 2025 TMB conditions are good. In previous years, our Tour du Mont Blanc July groups have encountered more snow.

tmb water sources

Despite the heat, most of the natural water sources are still providing water! At the time of writing (late July), the only fountain that has stopped running is the one at Refuge Balme before Col du Bonhomme. We’ve had some more rain over the last two days, so this fountain might start working again… But don’t depend on it. You should still be able to refill your water bottles at least once a day.

tmb Nature

If you’re hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc in July, look out for deep blue gentian flowers, which are in full bloom. Oli has spotted our first Edelweiss of the season, and in the forests you’ll probably see Martigan Lilies. The marmots are out in full, and some groups have seen an ibex or two. Grant and I were scrambling above Lac Blanc on July 8th and saw five young ibex in different spots along the trail there. Hiking the TMB in July is normally a great opportunity to see lots of typical alpine plants and wildlife.

Lifts & refreshments

All the ski lifts are now open (including the lift down to Courmayeur). Likewise, all the refuges and buvettes (small cafes / restaurants) are open, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to taste local dishes. Again, this is one of the many benefits to joining a Tour du Mont Blanc July group!

tmb conditions : trail & weather

In general the hiking conditions of the TMB this July are very easy. There is just one small snow bridge (detailed below), and no patches of snow to cross. Additionally, the weather this month has been pretty stable…

Tour du Mont Blanc July hazards

As we said in June, most of the snow bridges have now melted away, and there are very few patches of snow. The one remaining snow bridge is on the climb up from Champex to Bovine, and this is now so dangerous to cross that it has been fenced off. Instead of crossing the thin snow, you’ll follow the new route that goes slightly higher than the normal trail. Below you can see a photo of how this snow bridge looked at the beginning of July (July 7th, when Sarah guided a group across), and you can compare how it looked by the end of July (21st) when Ben was there.

Snow bridges like these are tricky and they’re the main thing to watch out for when doing a Tour du Mont Blanc in July. They get thinner and thinner throughout the summer, until they eventually collapse in on themselves.

The river crossing that we described last month (near Bovine) is now much easier, as we have less snow melt. All the typical TMB variant routes are now accessible, including Fenêtre d’Arpette and Col des Fours (see June for more details). This is fairly typical of Tour du Mont Blanc July conditions.

Tour du Mont Blanc July weather

July can often be a difficult month weather-wise, as temperatures get very high and then we often have big thunderstorms in the afternoons. However, this month the temperatures haven’t been too high (at the time of writing, our hottest valley temperature was around 30°c), and we haven’t had many thunderstorms. In fact, we’ve had a few unseasonably cold days, with a fresh dusting of snow high up. On the 8th July, the valley temperature dropped to 8°c! The fresh snow will not stick around, don’t worry! But it’s interesting to note that hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc in July doesn’t guarantee you’ll avoid cold weather!

In the last few days (21st July) we’ve had some more rain, and there has been a small landslide in Val Ferret. This means the road is closed, which means you cannot drive to the end of the valley and so the buses won’t be running. We imagine it’ll be open again though in the next few days…

The temperatures have started to rise, so watch out for afternoon storms. If you are hiking the Tour de Mont Blanc in July, make sure to set off early on warm days so that you can get to your accommodation safely. To learn more about how to stay safe in a thunderstorm, read our post about Tour du Mont Blanc weather.

What’s on in July?

There are always cultural events going on in the TMB towns and villages. This month, look out for the following…

  • 4th – 5th July : Limitless Days Festival
If you’re staying in Les Houches, you might see this event being celebrated by Lac des Chavants. It is a fairly new, local event that provides free access to mountain activities for people with disabilities.
  • 3rd – 6th July : Arc’Teryx Alpine Academy
This is an annual event to help mountain enthusiasts hone their skills. Sponsored athletes and local guides provide workshops in areas such as climbing, trail running and photography. The organisers also put on a number of free events, such as music concerts in Parc Couttet.
  • 11th – 13th July : IFSC Climbing World Cup
If you visit Chamonix in late June / early July, you’ll notice a lot going on at Place du Mont Blanc. That’s because the sport climbing world cup is held here each year, and it takes a long time to assemble the huge wall! The event is free to watch, and there is always a great atmosphere. See their website for more information!
  • 11th – 13th July : Gran Trail Courmayeur race
A series of trail races will start from the town centre, varying in distance from 30 to 100 kilometres! If you are hiking from Col de la Seigne down to Maison Veille, look out for runners as they zip past. The winners of the 100km race will finish in the town centre just after mid-day.
  • 10th, 17th & 24th July : Apéro Musical in Trient
If you are staying in Trient, look out for this small music concert at Col de Forclaz and again at Hotel Ourse. For more information, visit the Trient website.
  • 27th – 31st July : Classical Music in Trient
If you are staying in Trient, look out for this small music concert at the village church.
  • 22nd – 27th July : Cosmo Jazz Festival
This is a fantastic event that takes place all over the Chamonix Valley, as well as in the surrounding mountains! Well-renown jazz performers put on live, often free concerts in incredible settings. If you’re in the valley, make sure to check out an event! Visit their site for more info.
